If you've ever tried eating dinner at a coffee table, you know it really isn't possible unless you don't mind being hunched over so far your nose touches your knees. But a single person—or even a pair of people—doesn't need a massive dining room table to suit their needs on a daily basis. If your living room needs to also serve as the dining room, consider a round café table with two chairs. It can easily be pulled out from the wall to fit four in the event of a dinner party just by adding two folding chairs.
Things that are hung on the wall, whether it’s art, mirrors, or sculptural objects, need to be placed in relation to the furniture. Don’t hang a tiny photo over the back of your sofa. Use either a large piece that is approximately two thirds the length of the sofa, or use a grouping of pieces. If you’re absolutely determined to use a particular piece of art and it’s too small, put it in a larger frame with a large matte around it. (For every problem there is a solution!).
Living rooms may be everyone's favorite space in the home for the warmth and coziness they afford, but we have to acknowledge the brilliant work of designers who went above and beyond, turning what's traditionally considered a place of relaxation into carefully curated chambers that also spark our imaginations. Sure, you'll find rolled-arm sofas and tufted ottomans and other creature comforts, but you'll also see unexpected paint treatments, eclectic combinations of antique, contemporary, and custom furnishings, and a slew of other elements that show just how much attention to detail went into each creation.
Like the name implies, the living room is easily one of the most important rooms in our homes. Unlike basements, kitchens or bathrooms, the living room is usually our first thought when it comes to decorating a new home. At the same time, living rooms need to be one of the most versatile spaces in your home. They take on a number of different roles which can make getting the decor just right a bit of a challenge. For some of us, the living room is still a more formal space reserved primarily for entertaining guests; for others, it's a very casual space. It's where we kick back after a long day to rest and relax or where we wile away the hours during a long weekend enjoying leisure activities like watching TV and reading.
