Midnight bathroom breaks are made worse with harsh lighting that causes temporary blindness upon flicking a switch. Invest in directional floor level lighting in hallways, staircases and the bathroom to create subtle warmth and a guide.
Door casings give a finished look to any room, but also protect from drafts. You'll probably want to match the door casings to other accents in the same room, like window casings, baseboards and trim. With many styles available, it's easy to match the dacor of any room. For an extra touch, adding a keystone to the top of any interior door gives an elegant look to the room.
Keep theme, colour schemes and material finishes consistent throughout the home, especially when it comes to lighting. Too many different styles in a sordid array throughout the home can be confusing on the eye and will cause uneasiness. Neutral, lighter tones will open up a space and make it appear larger, statement pops of colour (e.g. through lampshades) will add interest, while darker hues add a touch of luxury and cosiness. Keep it simple and consistent.
Aside from being functional, your furniture plays an important role in supporting your theme. Some pieces may function well but their style or color may stick out like a sore thumb. Try to salvage it with slipcovers, tablecloths or paint. If it's a lost cause, remove it from the room.
