A living room is one of the most public places in the house, so it should be both comfortable and stylish. Whether you use yours for entertaining or for kicking back with family, this multipurpose space needs to stand up to constant use. If your family room is starting to look a bit tired or dated, it may be time for a little refresh or perhaps even a full makeover.
One of the most important things to consider when arranging furniture in any room is traffic flow. People should not be tripping over furniture, or each other, to pass through the room. Make sure there are a couple feet (give or take a few inches) between the coffee table and sofa, and between chairs. Create a clear path so people can walk from one end of the room to the other without difficulty.
To add a little more interest or define your space a little more try layering area rugs on top of each other. It can add a little more color and pattern and it's a particularly great trick for seasonal decorating. In the colder months layering rugs can add coziness, then in the summer you can edit them and create a lighter look.
Using area rugs is a great way to define seating areas, but the number one mistake people make in the living room is using an area rug that's too small. Remember that all of the furniture should be able to comfortably sit on the carpet. If space doesn't allow it, make sure that at least the front legs of any large upholstered pieces are on the rug. (Small pieces like side chairs and tables should always have all four legs on the rug.)
